Mr. Matthews is an associate in the Firm’s Tort Defense Group. He has practiced in a wide variety of fields, and currently he focuses his practice on the defense of businesses and manufacturers in product liability and warranty litigation. He has successfully managed litigation programs for major automobile manufacturers involving dozens of cases in Virginia, regularly advises on document retention policies and electronically stored information, and is devoted to providing timely, accurate, and relevant legal advice to his clients. Mr. Matthews served as an officer in the United States Army for more than 12 years, the last six of which were spent in the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps. As a Judge Advocate, he tried over 50 criminal cases and administrative separation hearings involving complex criminal litigation. For two years, he coached military units on legal issues commonly encountered on the battlefield. In his final tour of duty as the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate of the Fort Eustis, Virginia legal office, Mr. Matthews supervised ten attorneys and twenty staff members providing legal support to the installation in the areas of tort litigation, legal assistance, criminal prosecution, environmental and contract law, and administrative and regulatory law. Before becoming a Judge Advocate, Mr. Matthews served as a Field Artillery officer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In his free time, he volunteers as an instructor, traveling around the country teaching firearms safety and rifle marksmanship skills.
