Mario Portela is vice president, Corporate Development, for Lyondell Chemical Company. In this capacity, he has global responsibility for mergers and acquisitions and strategic planning. He also acts as secretary to the CEO Staff Group. He has held this position since November 2004 and was appointed as an officer of the company in December 2006.
Previously, Portela was business director, Performance Chemicals. In this position, he had strategic and P&L responsibility for $2 billion annually in revenues, representing the company’s Solvents, De-Icers, BDO & Derivatives, Acetyls, and C4 Chemicals businesses.
Born in Africa and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, Portela started his career with British Petroleum. He joined ARCO Chemical in Barcelona, Spain, in 1989. He has held a variety of positions in Sales, Business Management and Planning in different countries in Europe. He moved to the United States with his family in 1999.
Portela received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from IMPE in Lisbon and pursued a variety of programs in Marketing and Finance with INSEAD (France), IMD (Switzerland) and Wharton, Penn. He speaks five languages. |
