Dean Marcella A. Sampson, 76, has served as a Member of Valassis' Board of Directors since August 1998 where she is the Chairwoman of Valassis' Corporate Governance/Nominating Committee and a Valassis Compensation/Stock Option Committee Member. She retired in 1999 from Central State University (CSU) in Wilberforce, Ohio. CSU is the oldest predominantly African-American university in the United States. During her 35 years of service to CSU, she served as Dean of Students and directed the CSU Career Services Center since 1975. Dean Sampson has also assisted with the placement of over 6,000 CSU graduates throughout American businesses. She has received awards and honors for her work in the field of education and is a recognized expert in college student placement, particularly experiential opportunities. She was awarded the National Service Commendation by former President Jimmy Carter at a ceremony at the White House and also received Chairperson of the Year from the National Alliance of Business. Her publications include National Youth Motivation Program Manual (co-author); Career Services Manual, “Interviewing in Perspective”; Cooperative Education Student – Employer Brochure; Handbook for Recruiting the New CSU Student; and the 1998-2000 CSU student handbook. She has served on the North Central (collegiate) Association Steering Subcommittee and the CSU Academic Progress Committee, and has served as the Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance Officer for CSU and has advised the Retention, Homecoming and Commencement committees for her university. Dean Sampson received her undergraduate degree in business administration from CSU and her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Dayton. She brings an inspirational life story to the corporation and its employees including the fact that in the 1930s her mother and father were the subject of a historic lawsuit to overturn Ohio’s miscegenation law against interracial marriages. Dean Sampson also actively participates in employee morale-building and recruiting events and advises the Human Resources department and the Valassis Diversity Council. |
