Born in 1939, Lord Simon read modern languages at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge before completing his MBA at INSEAD, Fontainebleau (1965-66).
He is a former Minister for Trade and Competitiveness in Europe at the Department of Trade and Industry and HM Treasury. He was an adviser to the Cabinet Office during 1999-2002 and is a former chairman of BP.
He was appointed CBE in 1991, knighted in 1995 and became a life peer in 1997.
In May 2000, he was appointed as an advisory director to Unilever and subsequently became a non-executive director in 2004. He also serves as a member of the nomination and remuneration committees.
Lord Simon has also been vice president of the European Round Table, a non-executive director of the Bank of England, Rio Tinto and Grand Metropolitan, and a member of the advisory boards of Deutsche Bank and Allianz.
A senior adviser to Morgan Stanley International, Lord Simon is also a non-executive director of Suez Group, France; a member of FITCH International Advisory Council, France; a member of the board of directors for CEPS, Belgium (Centre for European Policy Studies); and a director of Koenigswinter.
He is married and has two sons. |
