Lord Patten was a Member of Parliament in the UK from 1979 to 1992 and held various offices including: Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Northern Ireland Office and Minister for Overseas Development at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
He was Governor of Hong Kong from 1992 to 1997 when he oversaw the return of Hong Kong to China. He was European Commissioner for External Relations from 1999 to 2004. He is a member of the Privy Council and a Companion of Honour.
