Prior to joining Modern Bank, Mrs. Bains was the President of AFS Intercultural Programs, one of the world's largest non-profit, community-based volunteer organizations dedicated to building a more just and peaceful world through intercultural exchange.
Mrs. Bains retired at the end of 2003 as Senior Executive Vice President of HSBC North America and the highest-ranking woman and member of the Senior Management Committee. She was directly responsible for Private Banking, Brokerage, Fiduciary Services, Personal Trust and Estates, Tax Strategies, Asset Management and Mutual Funds in the United States and Canada. Assets Under Management totaled over $52 billion. Prior to HSBC's acquisition of Republic National Bank, Mrs. Bains was Executive Vice President responsible for Private Banking and Investments. She also had various executive posts with JP Morgan/Chase and Citibank.
Mrs. Bains holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the American University in Washington D.C. She is on the Board of Directors of Commonfund, Chair of the Board of Visitors of Duke University Medicine, Vice Chair of the Board of Visitors of the Terry Sanford Institute for Public Policy at Duke University. She is on the Board of Directors of the Roundabout Theater in New York, the Board of Trustees of The Jewish Museum, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Mrs. Bains is the former Chair of the Board of Trustees of American University, a former member of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Sharjah and former President of the 28,000 member Financial Women International Association (1984-85). She was honored by New York City YWCA as Woman Achiever in 1986, featured in the book, Working Woman for the 21st Century, featured in the 1998 Academy Award winning Documentary Short Subject film and was recognized as one of the top 100 women in Business Month magazine.
