Laurent (Larry) Baillargeon was appointed general counsel of Swift Energy Company on May 11, 2005, after having served as general council since December 17, 2004. In earlier positions, he served as the company’s general counsel for exploration and production (June 2003 to December 2004) and as associate general counsel (May 2000 to June 2003).
Mr. Baillargeon received a bachelor’s degree from Assumption College in Massachusetts, a masters of business administration from Regis University in Colorado, and a juris doctorate from South Texas College of Law.
He has 30 years of legal experience in the oil and gas business, during which he has negotiated and prepared legal documents relating to various types of commercial transactions, including corporate acquisitions, mergers, and divestitures. At Swift Energy, he continues in these activities, as well as many others related to the company’s business both in the United States and in New Zealand.
Prior to joining Swift Energy, he was vice president corporate land and general counsel of Petrocorp, Inc., and senior vice president and general counsel of Yankee Oil and Gas, Inc. He also held various legal positions with Venus Oil Company, Tenneco Oil Company, and Shell Oil Company and had an extensive private oil and gas practice in San Antonio, Texas.
He is a member of the American Corporate Counsel Association and the American Bar Association, serving as vice chairman of the ABA E&P Energy Section in 2002. He also is licensed by the Supreme Court of the United States and is a member of the Houston Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, and The College of the State Bar of Texas, to which he was elected as a fellow in 2003. In addition, he is a member of the State Bar of Massachusetts.
He is also a member of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen (AAPL) as a certified professional landman (CPL), as well as a member of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen (CAPL) and the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA).
