Lance J. Gotko
Lance J. Gotko's practice focuses on a wide variety of complex commercial litigation, including securities litigation, contractual disputes, employment discrimination, accountants' liability, and intellectual property. He has participated in several bench and jury trials and arbitrations, and has represented a number of individual and corporate clients in both corporate investigations and proceedings before various regulatory agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission. His recent matters have included representing individuals and corporations in connection with internal investigations and investigations conducted by the SEC and the U.S. Justice Department; a trial in federal court of copyright and contract claims; a trial in federal court of a commercial landlord/tenant dispute; and ongoing defense of a bad faith insurance case that has been litigated at virtually every level of the state and federal court systems. In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Gotko advises companies in connection with employment-related issues and general corporate transactions. As a member of the firm's Executive Employment Practice Group, Mr. Gotko regularly represents highly compensated individuals and groups of executives in the negotiation of their employment agreements, severance agreements, and in other matters arising out of their employment.
Mr. Gotko is a member of the Commercial Division (New York County) Advisory Committee, which helps bring issues and ideas to the attention of the justices of the New York Supreme Court's Commercial Division. He is also a member of the New York Inn of Court. From 2002 to 2005, Mr. Gotko served as a member of the Committee on Courts of Superior Jurisdiction of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
Mr. Gotko graduated from Michigan State University in 1985 and magna cum laude from Brooklyn Law School in 1988. After law school he completed a two-year clerkship for The Honorable John R. Bartels of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and a one-year clerkship for The Honorable Morton I. Greenberg of the U.S. Court for Appeals for the Third Circuit. He previously practiced at Sullivan & Cromwell.
