Dr. Klaus-Peter Beier, Director of the University of Michigan Virtual Reality Laboratory and the University of Michigan 3D Lab. Dr. Beier also holds the position of a Research Scientist with the College of Engineering and he is Adjunct Associate Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Dr. Beier received his Ph.D. in 1976 from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, in the combined areas of naval architecture and computer science. After serving as Director of the CAD Computing Center at the Technical University Berlin, he joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 1984. Dr. Beier founded the University of Michigan Virtual Reality Laboratory at the College of Engineering in 1993. Since 2002, he has also assumed the directorship of the 3D Lab in the Duderstadt Center, a service facility for the UofM community. As the head of both laboratories, Dr. Beier is involved in interdisciplinary research and development and works closely with many of the UofM schools and colleges. Dr. Beier has a regular teaching appointment (Eng 477 "Principles of Virtual Reality"). His areas of expertise include computer-aided design, geometric modeling, free-form curve and surface design, computer graphics, scientific visualization, and virtual reality. Recent research projects include "The Virtual Football Trainer" (UofM Athletic Department), "Virtual jet Ski Driving Simulator" (US Coast Guard), and "Virtual Disaster Simulator" (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). |
