Kimberly Merkel Chen has worked for over 25 years in the fields of architectural history, historic preservation, and urban planning. Prior to joining Johannas DesignGroup in 2005, Kim owned her own business in Richmond, Virginia, specializing in planning and historic preservation services.
After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1978, with a degree in Architectural History, Kim received a wide range of experience in cultural resources management and design while working for State and Federal historic preservation agencies and small architectural firms. Fascinated by the correlation between historic preservation and urban design, Kim completed a Masters of Urban Studies and Planning Degree with a concentration in Urban Revitalization from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1989.
Kim continues to apply her interest in urban design and historic preservation in both her professional and personal pursuits. Currently a member of the Adjunct Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, Kim teaches graduate level courses in Historic Preservation Planning, and serves on the board of the Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods (ACORN). Kim, her husband and son reside in Church Hill. |
