Kim S. Abello is a managing director of Duff & Phelps, LLC. Her multi-disciplinary background includes experience in valuation, accounting, finance, and taxation. She specializes in the valuation and financial issues involved in employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), fairness opinions, estate planning, litigation support, corporate planning, transaction structuring, and tax related opinions. In addition, Ms. Abello has been involved in the private placement of debt for closely held businesses. Prior to joining Duff & Phelps, LLC, Ms. Abello held senior positions with two other national valuation and financial advisory firms. Her clients include companies in many different industries including airlines, banking, communications, computer software, engineering, insurance, sports teams, steel, apparel, travel and transportation. Ms. Abello spent some time in the tax department of the Entrepreneurial Services Group of Ernst & Young where she was responsible for tax compliance, planning, and consulting with closely held corporations.
Ms. Abello earned a B.S. in Accountancy at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana (1983) and an M.S. in Taxation from DePaul University (1990). She is a certified public accountant, CPA, with an accredited in business valuation specialty, ABV. In addition, she is an accredited senior appraiser, ASA, of the American Society of Appraisers. She is a member Chicago Business Valuation Association and served as both the program chair and president of that organization. She also served on the board of directors of an insurance brokerage company for five years. Ms. Abello is a frequent speaker on valuation issues and has authored numerous publications on ESOPs, including the ESOP Chapter from Valuing a Business. She is a professional member of the American Society of Appraisers, the ESOP Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Illinois CPA Society.
