Kate's mind shot to a childhood memory, when she fired questions into a microphone (turkey baster) to her Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls regarding the nature of their friendship. She replied to the question, "So I'll major in journalism then." In college, Kate advised anyone who read her column on socio-political quandaries such as how to break up or behave in foreign countries. But, close to graduation, she listened for just a few seconds to her inner gypsy, non-competitive soul whispers and spent the next four years variously in a van with ten hippies volunteering (Deep South), solving major world problems (obviously) in the Peace Corps (West Indies) and teaching in the vending machine-clad country of Japan, living in the same hometown as Hello Kitty and Mt. Fuji. Kate's new American life consists mostly of working downtown, staring, and becoming re-enchanted with the amenities of American culture like diversity, democracy, and Diet Dr. Pepper Berries & Cream. Give this friendly little Iowan a smile if you see her around your fine city. But don't ask her any corn, pigs, or general farming questions because she simply knows nothing about it. |
