Experience:
Karen Abbott is head of the Group's Reinsurance Practice, with over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry. In addition to experience with insurance disputes, Karen advises clients on a range of non-contentious issues. She also works closely with the firm's Corporate, Finance and Restructuring Groups on cross-practice solutions for clients.
In reinsurance, Karen deals with a wide variety of issues from dispute resolution to working with clients on strategic solutions for whole books of account. Her work is multi-jurisdictional with a particular focus on transatlantic disputes and arbitrations involving the US, European and Bermuda markets.
In the professional indemnity arena, Karen works with international clients to resolve claims against financial institutions, regulatory bodies, brokers, accountants and lawyers on highly confidential and significant disputes.
Named as a Leading Individual in the latest Chambers and Legal 500 directories in both Insurance/Reinsurance Litigation and Professional Negligence, Karen has been described by clients as someone who received "numerous endorsements of her technical ability and capacity to advise on a range of matters" and "possesses sound business judgment and knows 'the right balance of when to be tough and when to be reasonable'" (Chambers UK 2007).
Notable Engagements:
Represented a captive insurance company in an arbitration (and subsequent proceedings in the Court of Appeal in England) that involved a multi-million pound reinsurance recovery.
Advised on a wide range of issues in relation to the collapse of HIH and the resulting implications for both inward and outward books of business for a client.
Represented both European and international markets in relation to the events of 9/11 in the US.
Handled various disputes including those involving the PA LMX Spiral investigations, the collapse of Independent Insurance Company, and allegations of negligence - in particular, of reinsurance brokers.
