Karen S. Martell has concentrated her practice in the areas of public finance, employment law, and immigration law since her graduation from law school in 1986. She has acted as bond counsel to more than 80 municipalities and school districts throughout New York State. She has extensive experience with both public and private financings, as well as issues financed through the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation and the United States Department of Agriculture.
Ms. Martell has counseled various municipalities and school districts on labor and employment law issues. She was a member of the bargaining team throughout the negotiations on a school district’s first teacher contract and has prepared numerous responses to claims filed with administrative bodies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the New York State Division of Human Rights. She also has extensive experience resolving issues under the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Ms. Martell has represented private employers on a variety of employment matters, including drafting and interpretation of employment contracts and handbooks, enforcement of nondisclosure agreements, wrongful discharge claims, employee drug testing programs, unemployment disputes, compensation and benefit matters, wage and hour law issues, and sex, age, and racial discrimination claims.

Ms. Martell is admitted to practice in the State of New York and is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the National Association of Bond Lawyers, and the Society for Human Resource Management. |
