Judith Sweeney Lederman received an honorary doctoral degree in Education from Rhode Island College (1995); M.S. in Natural Sciences from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1981); B.A. in Biology and Secondary Education from Rhode Island College (1972). Prior to her appointment at IIT, Judith was assistant professor of science education at Oregon State University, Curator of Education at the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium in Providence, Rhode Island, and adjunct professor at Providence College and the University of Rhode Island. From 1991-1994 she was the science director of a Science and Mathematics Resource Center where she supervised K-8 science education for 10 northern Rhode Island school districts. She taught physics and biology for 20 years in Lincoln, Rhode Island, and bilingual elementary science for two years in Providence.
Judith Sweeney Lederman has over 600 presentations/publications on the teaching and learning of science in both formal and informal settings and is co-authoring an elementary science methods text. She has presented in Taiwan, Australia, Russia, Canada, Mexico, and South Africa. She has served on the Board of Directors of NSTA and CESI, chaired the AETS Committee on Informal Science Education and is presently on the AETS and NARST Equity committees. Most recently, she has been elected President –Elect of CESI. Other recognitions include Rhode Island State Teacher of the Year, Milken Foundation National Educators Award, state Presidential Award, Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, and the Toyota TAPESTRY Award. |
