Experience
Judy has been with Pierce Atwood since 1991, providing real estate and conveyancing support to all departments of the firm.
Judy has concentrated her practice in real estate law. She has managed the real estate aspects of significant, complex, multi-site projects in Maine and northern New England. Judy’s background in real estate law includes experience in commercial and residential acquisitions, sales and financing, including title abstracting and search services, residential and commercial closing services, and title insurance underwriting for commercial and residential transactions. Her prior positions include staff attorney at Atlantic Title Company and president of Casco Bay Title Company, both of Portland, Maine and both specializing in abstracting services, title insurance underwriting, and residential closings. She served as title attorney in the Portland, Maine office of Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation and as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maine, representing the Department of Human Services.
Judy is a member of the Real Estate and Title Section of the Maine State Bar Association and is a past chair of the Section.
Education
Judy received a B.A. degree in history with highest distinction from the University of Maine and a J.D. degree from the University of Maine School of Law. She is also a graduate of Abbot Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
Professional Activities
Judy is a Leadership Gift Co-Chair for the Campaign for Justice, the legal community's statewide annual appeal to raise funds from lawyers to help meet the need for civil legal services for low-income Maine residents.
Judy is a fellow of the Maine Bar Foundation, and a member of the Maine State Bar (Real Estate, Women’s Law, and Environmental Law Sections) and Cumberland County Bar Associations, the Maine Land Conservation Attorney’s Network and an associate member of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors.
Civic Activities
Judy serves as a member of the board of directors of Friends of Casco Bay. Pursuant to a gubernatorial appointment, Judy served as a public member on the Board of Licensure for Professional Land Surveyors for the State of Maine, administering the statutory licensing requirements, including preparation and administration of examinations, rule-making, and disciplinary proceedings.
