Juan Luis Alonso-Rodrguez is a Capital Member of the Firm. He is Co-Chair of the Tax Practice Group and Chair of the Employee Benefits Practice Area.
Practice and Experience
Mr. Alonso has extensive experience in the design and implementation of qualified pension plans and nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements. He has had substantial experience in assisting "troubled" plans, including negotiations and submissions under the Puerto Rico Department of Treasury Closing Agreement program. Mr. Alonso also has significant experience and expertise in handling employee benefits matters in the mergers and acquisitions context. Mr. Alonso's areas of practice further include industrial and tourism tax exemption, and local taxation issues such as property, municipal license and Puerto Rico income taxes.
Education
He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Marquette University and a juris doctor from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. Before joining McConnell Valdés, Mr. Alonso was a senior tax consultant in the Tax Consulting Department of Ernst & Young in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Admissions
Mr. Alonso is a Certified Public Accountant and a registered Notary Public. He is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Memberships
He is a member of the Puerto Rico Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association and the Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants (Tax and Regulations Committees). He has lectured on various employment benefits and tax matters, including Puerto Rico tax consequences of distributions from qualified plans and recent developments in Puerto Rico tax law, regulations and jurisprudence.
Publications/Public Engagements
Mr. Alonso has published various articles concerning the Puerto Rico Educational Contribution Account. He has also participated as speaker at seminars sponsored by the Puerto Rico Society of Public Accountants. |
