Joseph J. Sweeney was named senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Applied Materials in July 2005. Responsible for all legal affairs, worldwide intellectual property and global security, Mr. Sweeney has been instrumental in ensuring strong corporate governance, which demonstrates Applied Materials’ leadership and commitment to its stakeholder communities, and in growing the company’s intellectual property portfolio that helps to protect its technology leadership. Mr. Sweeney served as group vice president of legal affairs and intellectual property, and corporate secretary since 2002.
Prior to joining Applied Materials in 1993, Mr. Sweeney had twenty years of legal experience including, vice president of administration at MIPS Technologies, Inc., a division of Silicon Graphics, vice president and general counsel of MIPS Computer Systems, Inc., senior attorney at Data General Corporation, and private law firms in Boston.
Mr. Sweeney received his A.B. from Harvard College in 1970, and his J.D. from Boston University in 1973. |
