Joseph A. Scafetta, Jr. is an attorney in the firm's Electrical/Mechanical Practice Group. His primary responsibility is reviewing and signing off on the work of others. He also reviews newly co-pending applications of the same inventor to determine whether they are related and must be disclosed to the examiners of each application. Additionally, he writes new U.S.-based utility and design applications. After filing, he prosecutes them in the U.S. and foreign patent offices through to issuance as patents.
Mr. Scafetta was a law clerk to the late Honorable Robert W. Hemphill in the U.S. District Court in Columbia, South Carolina before going into private practice for 12 years for several firms in the Washington, D.C. area. He had been a solo practitioner in Arlington, Virginia for another 12 years, prior to joining the firm in January 1999.
Mr. Scafetta has written extensively on patent and copyright law for various professional journals and won the prestigious Watson Award from the American Intellectual Property Law Association in January 1976, for an article on patent misuse.
Mr. Scafetta received a Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972, a Masters in Patent Law from Georgetown University in 1973, and a Masters in Business Administration, with honors, from the George Washington University in 1983. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1969.
Mr. Scafetta is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He also is admitted to practice before the state courts in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has been registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office since 1973. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Virginia Bar Association. |
