Experience:
Jonathan Medow has substantial experience litigating complex commercial disputes on a nationwide basis, particularly in the fields of securities regulation, professional responsibility and bankruptcy. At the present time, he is lead trial counsel for Arthur Andersen and Ernst & Young in a variety of matters, including all proceedings relating to Andersen’s audits of Waste Management and Charter Communications. He also is currently representing Deloitte & Touche in proceedings in California arising out of the bankruptcy of a large agricultural cooperative, Stillwater Mining Company in securities litigation in New York, and various other clients in a host of disputes. Recently, he defeated shareholder classes on behalf of Ernst & Young (IKON and Asche ) as well as yield burning claims asserted against Deloitte & Touche.
Previously, Jonathan has represented Grant Thornton (American Reserve and Sunbelt) and Arthur Andersen (Ben Franklin) in suits filed by financial regulators. He has represented Arthur Andersen (Figgie) and Ernst & Young (Fruit-of-the-Loom) in shareholder class actions. He has also represented issuers such as Dow Chemical and Coeur d’Alene Mines in market fraud cases, as well as in connection with related derivative proceedings. On behalf of Dow, he has defeated claims asserted under Section 16(b) of the Securities Exchange Act (Magma Power v. Dow). He has successfully challenged dead-hand poison pills and other defensive measures (Dunmire v. Baker). He has represented scores of witnesses before the SEC.
In the bankruptcy field, Jonathan has successfully represented Teachers Insurance in valuation proceedings filed by the owner of the One Magnificent Mile building in Chicago; US Robotics in contested plan proceedings in the Hayes Microcomputer bankruptcy; World Financial Network National Bank in adversary proceedings filed by Service Merchandise; and The Northern Trust Company in various matters.
Over the years, Jonathan’s practice has covered a wide variety of topics. He has litigated, among other things, take-or-pay disputes in the natural gas field (Natural Gas Pipeline v. Anschutz), claims for breach of fiduciary duty (Jacobson v. Himmel), challenges to complex software development projects (Gateway v. Ernst & Young) and claims under the Lanham Act (Monsanto v. Swiss Valley Farms).
Among the comments that clients have made about Jonathan’s work are that he "does a fantastic job - he is capable, smart and works hard" (Chambers USA 2006) and that he is "'as good as any I've seen'" (Chambers USA 2007). Prior to joining Mayer Brown, he served as a Law Clerk to The Honorable Susan Getzendanner, US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (1981-1983).
