Experience:
Jon Barrett has a general corporate and business practice. He advises his clients on the full range of general corporate matters, with additional focus on mergers and acquisitions. He counsels new and continuing businesses, joint ventures, growth and entrepreneurial ventures, and venture capital and private equity investors.
In addition to his corporate work, Jon practices sports law. He represents a major intercollegiate athletic conference and handles all of their contract negotiations, including the creation of their own sports television network and all of their telecast rights agreements. He also advises clients in the creation of regional sports networks.
Jon is the Partner-in-Charge of the firm's Charlotte office. He is listed in the Best Lawyers in America.
Notable Engagements:
Advised a major intercollegiate athletic conference in the creation of the first national sports telecast network established by a collegiate conference (2006).
Represented a major intercollegiate athletic conference in its negotiations concerning national over-the-air, cable, and syndicated telecasts of its sporting events (2006).
Negotiated the consolidation of multi-billion dollar credit card businesses in connection with the merger of two major financial institutions (2004).
Represented a multi-billion dollar real estate investment trust in connection with the redemption of nine Dutch pension funds that were investors in the REIT and the subsequent liquidation of the REIT (2003).
Represented the successful acquirer of a workers’ compensation insurance company and advised on its redomestication from Delaware to South Carolina (2003).
Represented buyers, sellers, and investors in a variety of private equity transactions (2005, 2006, and 2007).
