Mr. Hemingway attended the University of Washington graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a B.S. in Business Administration and becoming licensed as a Certified Public Accountant and Real Estate Broker, all in 1979. In 1982 he graduated from University of Washington Law School and joined the largest firm in Seattle, Bogle & Gates, after working for them while attending school.
In 1985, Mr. Hemingway joined the company as its general counsel. In 1987, Mr. Hemingway and John Gray formed Rail Management Services, which has grown to be the world’s largest operator of intermodal rail terminals. In 1989, he was promoted to senior vice president and director with responsibility for company administrative matters and establishing SSA Marine’s presence in the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. In 1991, Mr. Hemingway became president and C.E.O. of the company establishing SSA Marine’s TQM processes in 1992 and SSA Marine’s Operations College in 1993.
In 1994, he initiated development of international operations, including creation of the largest container terminal in Latin America, Manzanillo International Terminal [MIT] in Colon, Panama in 1995, the largest terminal operator in Mexico with four ports under TMMPyT in 1995 and the largest terminal operator in Chile with two ports in 1999. In July 1999, Mr. Hemingway and Matson Navigation formed SSA Terminals, LLC, which is now the largest container terminal operator on the West Coast.
In 2000, Mr. Hemingway reorganized SSA Marine into three operating divisions and branded its IT operation as Tideworks Technology, one of the world’s largest providers of information systems software and integration to the port industry. In 2003, the company established Carrix as its new brand for all its activities.
Carrix affiliates have repeatedly won the “Best Container Terminal” by the Caribbean Shipping Association and first place in “Best Overall Standards for Marine Terminal Operators” in Marine Digest’s poll of shippers. Carrix remains the largest independent and privately-held terminal operator.
Mr. Hemingway also serves as chief executive officer, president and director of over 50 other Carrix affiliates and on the board of directors of over 20 joint ventures.
Mr. Hemingway serves on the board of the National Association of Waterfront Employers and is a past member of the boards of the Pacific Maritime Association and Pacific Merchant Shipping Association He is chairman of PierPass, an industry collaboration to improve air quality and traffic. He participates in a number of community and philanthropic organizations and endeavors.
On September 4, 2000, Mr. Hemingway was awarded the Order of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa for distinguished service and contribution to the development of Panama. This is the highest honor conferred by the Government of Panama on outstanding foreign personalities. |
