Throughout his career as a magazine editor, John Rasmus has been influential in shaping the direction of contemporary adventure journalism. Formerly the editor of Outside and Men's Journal magazines, Rasmus led the launch of National Geographic Adventure in April 1999. As editor in chief of Adventure, he has continued to help define the genre, publishing articles that have surprised readers, stirred debates and made headlines.
National Geographic Adventure is known for its literary excellence, publishing such writers as Tim Cahill, Philip Caputo, Laurence Gonzales, Robert Young Pelton, Sebastian Junger and David Quammen. Over the years, Rasmus published the first national magazine articles of such well-known writers as Quammen, Junger, Kira Salak and Jon Krakauer.
Since its launch, National Geographic Adventure has amassed a remarkable 12 National Magazine Award nominations and has won the Award four times, including General Excellence in 2002. In 2002 and 2005 Adventure was recognized as Best Travel Magazine by the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition. The magazine has also won gold for Best Consumer Sports & Leisure Magazine at Folio's Editorial Excellence Awards.
Rasmus leads an active lifestyle, and has trekked in the Himalayas, white-water rafted in South America and hiked extensively in the United States and Europe. He resides in Chappaqua, N.Y., with his wife and two daughters. |
