John Merow is a member of Brock Capital Group LLC. He is former Chairman and Senior Partner of the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. In his career as a business and financial lawyer he has served major multinational corporate and financial businesses in public and private financing, project finance, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate work.
Mr. Merow is an experienced director of business and non-profit corporations, the principal ones being Aleris International and its predecessor Commonwealth Industries (aluminum rolled products and recycling), the 23 investment companies in the Seligman group, Kaiser Aluminum, before its 1987 takeover (global integrated aluminum company, refractories, oil & gas, real estate and shipping), New York-Presbyterian Hospital and, as Vice Chairman chairing the board, New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System, Inc. (30 hospitals).
His board memberships have included service on the audit committees of Aleris, the Seligman companies, Kaiser Aluminum (Chairman), New York-Presbyterian, the Foreign Policy Association (Chairman), and the Municipal Art Society of New York (Chairman).
Mr. Merow served as an adviser on the American Law Institute Project on Corporate Governance and is a consultative group member of the ALI Project on the Law of Nonprofit Organizations.
He has pursued his international interests as a member of the Executive Committee and Secretary of the United States Council for International Business, an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations, board member of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s global investment and grants organizations, member of board leadership of the Foreign Policy Association, Chairman of the American Australian Association and Vice Chairman of the United States-New Zealand Council. Mr. Merow was appointed an Honorary Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for service to U.S.-Australian relations.
Mr. Merow attended the University of California at Los Angeles, graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Engineering (Civil), served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and is a graduate of Harvard Law School. |
