John primary focus is intellectual property and technology law. He regularly appears in federal and state courts on behalf of clients involved in intellectual property litigation, including patent jury trials. He also handles the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign trademark and chemically related patent applications for a wide range of domestic clients. He advises clients on matters of patent and trademark validity and renders opinions relating to infringement and right to use studies. John provides counsel regarding the protection and transfer of technology, licensing and joint venture agreements, trade secrets, and unfair competition concerns. John is a member and former director of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). He has chaired the AIPLA’s Patent Law, Licensing, and Public Information Committees and is currently an AIPLA Fellow. He was named one of the state’s top patent lawyers in a poll taken by California Lawyer. John has written and lectured on a wide variety of patent law and related litigation issues and is an active member of the American, California and Ohio State Bar Associations. Prior to earning his bachelor of science degree, John studied at the United States Air Force Academy. He was an associate with the law firm of Lyon & Lyon before acting as patents and licensing counsel for TRW Inc. where he was responsible for its Energy Division. John was a partner in the offices of Pretty, Schroeder, Brueggermann & Clark before beginning his tenure with Calfee as a partner in 1994. |
