John R. Doyle is of counsel in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm’s Chicago office. As partner in the Trial Department, John focuses his practice in the areas of product liability, personal injury defense, Consumer Product Safety Commission investigations and recalls, architecture and engineering malpractice, construction claims, insurance defense and coverage issues, restrictive covenants and commercial disputes.
John has worked extensively with manufacturers, distributors and sellers in the defense of their products and in counseling to avoid such claims. He also has performed significant trial work and counseling for architects and engineers. He has acted as general counsel for one of the largest engineering firms in the country.
John has extensive experience with both jury and bench trials in the state and federal courts, and before the American Arbitration Association, the Illinois Court of Claims and other tribunals. He is qualified as a member of the United States District Court’s trial bar, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern District of Wisconsin and the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. John is also certified for practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and the Illinois Supreme Court.
Actively involved in alternative dispute resolution, John has participated in many arbitration proceedings, mediations and in multiple major cases being resolved through the Endispute process. He is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and has served in the past for many years on its Judicial Evaluation Committee. He is a past vice-chairman of the American Bar Association’s Architects Section on Torts and Insurance Committee.
During law school, John was a member of the DePaul Law Review. He served on the DePaul Law School Alumni Board from 1987 to 1993 and was president of the board from 1991 to 1993.
John helped organize the Firm's Pro Bono Committee, served as its chairman and has been on the Boards of Directors of The Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education (IICLE) and the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) since 1998.
John was elected to the Immaculate Conception Grade School Board in 1990. He served as school board president in 1992 and 1993. He also served on the board of governors of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital from 1993 to 1998.
