Highly regarded as an international expert in cancer immunotherapy and research, Dr. Kirkwood founded the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute’s (UPCI) Medical Oncology Division and the institute’s Clinical Investigation Program. He is currently director of the Melanoma Center at UPCI and also professor and vice chairman for clinical research in the university’s department of medicine.
Dr. Kirkwood’s research concentrates on regional, national and international investigations of new biological and cytotoxic therapy for melanoma and other refractory tumors. He is largely responsible for making the UPCI Melanoma Center a national reference for studies of new drug and biological interventions in that cancer. He is a leader in laboratory and clinical studies across the spectrum of the disease.
