John Bowen represents both unionized and non-unionized employers in the areas of labor and employment law and human resource consulting. Recognizing from experience that preventive employee relations is more beneficial and cost-effective than after-the-fact cures, John regularly counsels management in developing preventive strategies as well as effective and innovative solutions to the multitude of work-law challenges confronting employers. He has extensive experience successfully representing employers in unfair labor practice and representation proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board. He regularly counsels employers with regard to union organizing campaigns, grievance arbitration proceedings, collective bargaining, and strike management. John also advises clients regarding wage and hour compliance, complex ADA and FMLA issues and the labor relations implications that can result from corporate acquisitions and sales, workforce reductions, and plant closings.
John frequently conducts seminars, workshops and in-house leadership training regarding effective management strategies, union avoidance techniques, collective bargaining, preventive employee relations and managing employees in a union workforce.
Before joining Ford & Harrison, John was a shareholder with Seaton, Beck, Peters, Bowen & Feuss. He previously practiced at Seyfarth Shaw in Chicago and Jackson Lewis in Minneapolis. In 2000, John became a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources and is an active member of SHRM and the Twin Cities Human Resource Association (TCHRA). He also serves on the Human Resource Council for the Printing Industry of Minnesota (PIM) and is a member of the Labor and Employment Law Sections of the Minnesota and Hennepin County Bar Associations. In 2005, John was elected to the Board of Directors for YouthLink, Inc. - a Minneapolis based non-profit organization that provides shelter and related services for disadvantaged teens.
John has published numerous articles in various trade publications and served as a labor relations columnist for Minnesota Finance & Commerce. In addition, John served as an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas teaching courses on employment law in the workplace. Clients include employers in manufacturing, food processing, construction, healthcare, transportation and printing industries.
