John Finnegan Biography :

John D. Finnegan joined The Chubb Corporation on December 1 2002 as president and chief executive officer and was elected to the additional position of Chairman of the Board in December 2003. Founded in 1882 Chubb is one of the world’s leading property and casualty insurers with 11 800 employees in more than 120 offices on five continents. Previously Mr. Finnegan was president of General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) chairman of the GMAC board of directors and executive vice president of General Motors Corporation (GM). Mr. Finnegan was responsible for GMAC’s activities worldwide including the company’s automobile finance insurance commercial finance and mortgage operations. He was also president and chairman of the GMAC Mortgage Group board of directors and a director of GMAC Insurance Operations.

Mr. Finnegan was born January 31 1949 in Jersey City NJ. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Princeton University in 1971 a law degree from Fordham Law School in 1975 and a M.B.A. from Rutgers University in 1976.

In 1976 Mr. Finnegan joined GMAC's tax staff in New York. In 1977 he transferred to GM as an analyst in the company’s New York Treasurer's Office. He was promoted in 1981 to director of International Banking. In 1985 he transferred to GMAC's headquarters in Detroit as director of Strategic Planning.

Mr. Finnegan was promoted to chief financial officer of the GMAC Mortgage Corporation in 1986. The following year he was promoted to assistant treasurer of GM's Worldwide Benefits Compensation Staff in New York and was named assistant treasurer of International Operations in 1989. In 1992 he became executive vice president and chief financial officer of GMAC adding the responsibilities of chairman and president of GMAC Mortgage Corporation in 1994. He was named vice president and treasurer of GM in New York in 1995 and was promoted to president of GMAC and vice president group executive of General Motors in November 1997. In April 1999 while continuing as president of GMAC he was promoted to chairman of GMAC and to executive vice president of General Motors. He also served as GM’s interim chief financial officer for several months during 2000.

Mr. Finnegan is a director of Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. and a member of the Business Council The Business Roundtable and the Financial Services Roundtable.
