As senior vice president, Natural Gas and In Situ Resources, Joel is responsible for continuing to develop Suncor’s natural gas production as a financial hedge against the company’s internal energy demands. He is also responsible for oil sands in situ subsurface technology and reservoir development.
Joel joined Suncor in 1979. Throughout his career, he has worked in many aspects of Suncor’s oil and gas business, including production engineering, reservoir engineering, and field operations, as well as leading finance, planning, operations, and exploration and development groups. Before establishing himself in his current role, Joel held the positions of vice president of exploration and development for Suncor’s natural gas business and was corporate vice president for strategy and development.
Joel graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
