Joel T. Murphy is President of the Retail Division of Cousins Properties Incorporated and a member of the Company's management committee. Cousins Properties is an Atlanta-based REIT specializing in the development of retail office residential industrial and mixed-use projects and is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange ("CUZ"). Joel is also an active member of the shopping center industry trade association the International Council of Shopping Centers serving on its Board of Trustees and Executive Committee.
As President of the Retail Division Joel oversees all development activities for the division which has developed more than 8.5 million square feet of retail space with a total development cost of more than $1 billion. In addition Joel oversees the operation of the Cousins’ retail portfolio including power centers and Cousins' acclaimed retail projects - The Avenue® open-air specialty centers.
Noted for its pedestrian-friendly nature extensive landscaping and distinctive architecture The Avenue places traditional mall merchants in upscale open-air centers alongside select local merchants and specialty restaurants. The Avenue projects are occupied by premier national retailers such as Williams Sonoma Chico's Borders Gap Banana Republic Pottery Barn Talbots and Ann Taylor. The Avenue East Cobb (Cousins' first Avenue development) has received several awards for design and functionality including an Award for Excellence from the Urban Land Institute a Certificate of Merit for Design and Development from the International Council of Shopping Centers and the superior achievement in design and imaging from Shopping Center World magazine. Since opening The Avenue East Cobb in 1999 Cousins has developed three additional Avenues in Atlanta one in Los Angeles one in Florida one in Tennessee and the newest Avenue project The Avenue Murfreesboro began constuction in July 2006 outside of Nashville Tennessee. The Avenue Webb Gin in Gwinett County Georgia the Company’s fourth Avenue in Atlanta opened in August 2006. There are several additional projects in various stages of development across the United States.

Memberships and Civic Involvement: Joel is a member of the Young President's Organization the Atlanta Rotary Club and serves on the Board of Trustees for Trinity School. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Westminster Schools and is Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. Joel is also an avid golfer and coaches youth soccer and baseball teams. |
