Joe Hortiz was recently promoted to national scout after 3 years covering the Southeast, including schools in the SEC, ACC and Conference-USA. Hortiz originally joined the Ravens in 1998 as a personnel assistant and has worked his way up the scouting ranks. He works with director of college scouting Eric DeCosta and fellow national scout Lional Vital to cover schools across country.
Prior to his 3 years as Southeast area scout, Hortiz spent 2 years scouting the Northeast for the Ravens and performed "the box" workout at schools across the country for 3 spring seasons.
A football personnel assistant in his 1st 3 years with the club, Joe worked both with the pro and college scouting staffs. His duties included assisting GM Ozzie Newsome and capologist Pat Moriarty, who manages the salary cap.
While earning his B.S. in accounting from Auburn, Joe was an undergraduate assistant coach for Terry Bowden and the Tigers' football team from 1995-97. He worked with both the QBs and WRs and also coached the scout team LBs and secondary. He compiled weekly scouting reports and breakdowns of upcoming opponents defenses and also coordinated Auburn's summer football camps.
Son of Joe and Marlene Hortiz, Joe attended Salesianum (Wilmington, DE) HS and enjoys golfing and fishing. He and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Baltimore, MD.
