As Vice President of Global Education, Government and Healthcare at Sun Microsystems, Joe Hartley leads a diverse organization committed to providing advanced technologies and services to key constituencies in the public sector. His team is responsible for sales of Sun products and services into a variety of communities, including higher education, research, primary and secondary schools (K-12), defense and security, public safety, state and local government, healthcare and life sciences. Specific functions within Joe's organization include sales, strategic planning, marketing, business development, external research, programs and collaborations.
Joe brings over 20 years of sales, marketing and operational experience to this position. In 2001, he was instrumental in the launch of Sun's Global Education & Research line of business, where he held a number of sales, sales leadership, marketing and business development roles.
Most recently, Joe led the sales and marketing process teams for Sun's Integrated Business Information Solution (IBIS) project, an initiative that will make it much easier to do business with Sun. He previously was vice president of Global Sales and Services operations for the United States, Canada and Latin America. Before joining Sun in 1992, Joe held sales positions with Unisys Corporation, where he handled Northern California state and local government and healthcare accounts.
Joe graduated from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, with a bachelor of science degree in Public Administration. He was also a fellow with the Coro Foundation for Public Affairs Leadership. In his spare time, he volunteers as a leader in his sons' Boy Scout Troop and is avid adventure traveler.
