Joaquin Carbonell is senior vice president and general counsel of AT&T's wireless operations with responsibility for the unit's legal matters.
Previously, Carbonell was vice president and group counsel of wireless services for BellSouth Enterprises, Inc. and was responsible for the legal operations for Wireless Services.
Prior to that, Carbonell served as president of BellSouth Europe, a division of BellSouth International (BSI). There he was responsible for all activities of BellSouth in Europe.
From BellSouth Europe's Headquarters office in Brussels, Belgium, he supervised business operations in Germany (cellular) and Denmark (cellular).
Prior to his European assignment, Carbonell was BSI president for Latin America, where his responsibilities included overseeing operations and business development activities for that region. He was promoted to that position from vice president - Latin America, where he was responsible for business development activities.
Carbonell began his career with BellSouth in 1980 as an attorney with the Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company and has held various positions of increasing responsibility in the Legal Department. In 1986, he was named general attorney for Florida, where he was responsible for all of BellSouth's legal matters in that state. In 1990, Carbonell was appointed general attorney for the BellSouth office in Washington, DC, where he specialized in federal and state regulatory matters and legislative affairs.
A native of Camaguey, Cuba, Carbonell attended Boston College, where he graduated summa cum laude and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He also holds a Juris Doctorate Degree from Duke University's School of Law. In 1989, he was named an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow at Stanford University, where he received a Masters Degree in Management.
