His unique and varied abilities to manage complex real estate transactions has resulted in sales of over $800 million in commercial and residential real estate. With an extensive background in commercial/investment real estate, Mr. MacDonnell has sold hundreds of commercial properties throughout the United States, including large multi-family portfolios, shopping malls, office buildings, hotels, condominium and townhome developments, warehouses, trophy homes, fishing resorts, development land, and manufactured home communities.
Licensed in 19 states, he has been responsible for many of the firm’s highest profile sales, and has been instrumental in the development and implementation of many of the company’s groundbreaking auction and marketing programs. From 1991 through 1995, Mr. MacDonnell managed the firm’s relationship with the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) and FDIC. Under his guidance, the firm was recognized as the highest rated contractor in the auction industry, with 248 commercial properties sold for over $350 million.
Mr. MacDonnell designed the firm’s sealed bid auction program, which has since become an industry standard. The initial sealed bid offering resulted in the sale of six Art Deco hotels on Miami’s trendy South Beach, for $19 million. Other innovations created by Mr. MacDonnell include the firm’s first blueprint auction for residential developers, where homes are auctioned and sold before they are built, and his most recent innovation, the lease-at-auction of vacant office space in large office parks.
Mr. MacDonnell has sold numerous unique properties throughout the country, including Scimitar Ridge Ranch in Northwest Washington State, the Redstone Castle (twice) near Aspen, Colorado, and Tall Timber Estate in Denver’s foothills. His innate knowledge of markets in Vail, Steamboat Springs, Breckenridge, and other resort locations has resulted in the sale of numerous resorts, second homes, and development land.
An active member of the professional community, he is a member of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA) and the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). As a respected authority in the real estate auction industry, he has written numerous articles for newspapers and trade publications, including Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, The Colorado Real Estate Journal, Crittenden’s Manufactured Housing Report and The Allen Report, and is regularly quoted in those publications.
Prior to his successes in the real estate arena, Mr. MacDonnell enjoyed a career as a pitcher in professional baseball’s Chicago White Sox organization.
