Jim Friedel was named senior vice president - Pacific in August 2005, in addition to his role as president, Northwest Airlines Cargo ("NWA Cargo"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Northwest Airlines.
As senior vice president - Pacific, Friedel has profit-and-loss responsibility for Northwest's passenger business between the U.S. and Asia, with oversight of schedule planning, revenue management, marketing, finance, and Asia-based sales, operations, and airport affairs. Northwest generates approximately $2 billion in annual revenues from its Pacific passenger network, and is the number one carrier between the U.S. and Japan.
As NWA Cargo's president since 1999, Friedel is responsible for all NWA Cargo activities, including sales, operations, network management, alliance development, information technology, and finance. NWA Cargo moves freight on all Northwest-operated flights, including 14 Boeing 747 freighters dedicated exclusively to service between the U.S. and Asia. NWA Cargo generates approximately $1 billion in annual revenues, of which 75 percent are earned in the Pacific.
Under Friedel's leadership, since 1999, NWA Cargo has almost doubled its 747 freighter fleet. In 2000, it launched a code-share partnership with JAL Cargo, complementing NWA's Japan-U.S. services and in 2001, NWA Cargo partnered with DHL Worldwide Express to launch freighter service between Asia and DHL's U.S. hub. In 2003, NWA Cargo partnered with two other airlines to launch Cargo Portal Services, the industry's leading e-booking tool, which handles more than 70 percent of NWA Cargo's international bookings. In 2005, NWA Cargo launched a code-share partnership with Korean Airlines Cargo, wherein the partners transfer freight between their flights at NWA Cargo's hub in Anchorage.
Friedel joined Northwest in 1991, and has held positions in corporate finance, passenger reservations, and passenger marketing, before joining NWA Cargo in 1997 as head of sales and marketing. Prior to Northwest, Friedel was a consultant with Mercer Management Consulting, based in Washington D.C. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Princeton University. |
