Jim commands extensive experience in many facets of the healthcare industry. He has held positions with some of Tennessee's most prominent educational and private healthcare institutions. His expertise includes healthcare management as well as developing, marketing and promoting services that have raised the level of Tennessee's health standards and services. Jim's work also has resulted in a vast network of relationships with physicians and physician practices.
Jim began his career in health care over 30 years ago at the University of Tennessee where he served in administrative positions at the Center for Health Services, and the Colleges of Medicine, Education, and Human Ecology. As a professor, director and dean, Jim first recognized the healthcare industry was in transition and that the issues involved were complex. Although he moved to the private sector, Jim retains his relationship with the university.
Jim left the University of Tennessee for an administrative position at the Hospital Corporation of America, moving quickly into the role of director at HCA's Center for Research and Education. There he focused on problem-solving between HCA administrators and the medical staff as he utilized his skills of coordinating and communication. He oversaw a million budget and also counts among his accomplishments the development of a strong patient referral network between rural HCA facilities and the larger hospitals in the system. He also served as a mediator between pharmaceutical companies and HCA doctors regarding the proper use of pharmaceuticals, which resulted in lower costs and improved patient outcomes.
Baptist Hospital's Center for Medical Administration (CME) recruited Jim in 1989 to become vice president and ultimately director of the program. He managed the medical education programs of a 752-bed, multi-specialty hospital. At Baptist, Jim honed his skills as a liaison between Baptist specialist physicians and primary care physicians throughout Middle Tennessee, increasing referrals to Baptist. Jim developed an unusual level of trust among doctors, and to this day, physicians throughout the area turn to Jim for advice in marketing and practice-related issues. During his five years at Baptist, Jim also established profitable specialty clinics at rural Baptist hospitals and developed strategic and business plans to increase Baptist's market share and revenues.
To utilize the healthcare industry knowledge he had garnered over the first 20 years of his career, Jim left Baptist in 2004 to offer his consulting services to mid-state facilities. He developed a marketing plan for the Tennessee Therapy Centers, helping them increase patient volume. Additionally, Jim played a critical role at Nashville's Tennessee Oncology, assisting this physicians' practice with new business development.
Jim began working as a consultant with 2nd Generation Capital in 2005 on a joint project between 2nd Generation and Tennessee Oncology to research and develop a business plan for a de novo business, Compass Oncology -- a disease management company launched in the Spring of 2006.
