Jessica Smith Assistant Director, Digital Forensics Jessica Reust is responsible for analyzing digital evidence in criminal, civil and regulatory investigations for computer fraud and abuse, spoliation claims, intellectual property theft and other matters. Ms. Reust assists with the strategic development of the firm s e-discovery tools and methodologies, and works on the preservation, processing, and production of data in electronic discovery projects. In digital forensics matters, Ms. Reust has provided expert testimony and assisted in the forensic analysis of computers in a variety of cases, including the evaluation of obstructive deletion activity, the recovery of files for use in DNA analysis, and to document linkages between computers. Among Ms. Reust s more significant cases is her expert testimony at the military trial of former U.S. Naval Academy quarterback Lamar Owens. Ms. Reust s forensic analysis of the computers used by the defendant and the complainant established Instant Messaging links between the two, and Mr. Owens was subsequently acquitted of a rape charge. Ms. Reust has also assisted in the forensic analysis of computers used by members of a militant animal rights organization that made extensive use of encryption, wiping, and disk cleaning tools; those members were subsequently convicted in Federal Court in New Jersey after the testimony of a Stroz Friedberg examiner on behalf of the Government. She also successfully investigated a wide-spread network intrusion at a major university to determine the method of compromise, the intruders intent, and the access they gained to confidential data. In electronic discovery matters, Ms. Reust has experience in multiple cases in managing the collection, processing and filtering of data from disparate sources for numerous users and providing counsel with up-to-date status summaries of volumes, types and related information about the data. She has also participated in establishing mobile electronic discovery processing capabilities in EU countries and structuring data processing protocols to comply with EU privacy laws. In one recent matter, Ms. Reust assisted in an international, multi-terabyte data preservation, analysis and review effort for an internal investigation of a major European corporation. Prior to joining Stroz Friedberg, Ms. Reust was a forensic science fellow at the Public Defender Service for Washington, DC where she assisted attorneys in analyzing forensic science issues for casework and admissibility hearings. Additionally, Ms. Reust conducted research and formulated reports on different matters across a number of forensic science disciplines. Ms. Reust has served in different Information Technology-related capacities at several organizations including: The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, New American Schools, The George Washington University, and The National Center for Strategic Nonprofit Planning & Community Leadership. Ms. Reust is also an EnCase certified Forensic Examiner. |
