Jeffrey M. Trent, Ph.D. is President and Scientific Director of the Translational Genomics Institute (TGen) in Phoenix, Arizona. Prior to leading TGen, Dr. Trent joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1993 to establish and serve as the founding Director of the Division of Intramural Research of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Under his guidance, this division became an internationally recognized research center in human genetics. He was also Professor of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University College of Medicine.
Prior to his arrival at the NIH, Dr. Trent was Emanuel N. Maisel Professor of Oncology and Professor of Radiation Oncology and Human Genetics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He served as Director of the Division of Cancer Biology, and Director of Basic Sciences in the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Throughout his career Dr. Trent has specialized in integrating new technologies from the Human Genome Project (e.g., cDNA microarrays, high throughput genotyping, etc.) into the study of molecular changes related to the predisposition to, and progression of human cancer and other complex diseases. He very recently moved from the NIH to help establish and direct TGen, and to serve as a Senior Scientific Advisor to the International Genomics Consortium (IGC).
His departure from the NIH followed a remarkable merger of academic, governmental, and business leadership within the State of Arizona united in the development of a world-class independent research center aimed at conducting agile and productive, disease-focused genomic research that translates into improvements in human health. Research within TGen will include applying advances from the Human Genome Project to address disease gene identification, development and validation of cancer diagnostics, generation of new and sharper tools in genomic and computational research, and ultimately facilitate therapeutic advances for disorders ranging from cancer and diabetes to neurological disorders.
Dr. Trent received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Genetics from the University of Arizona, Tucson. He is the author of over 300 manuscripts in the scientific literature, and sits on the editorial boards of a dozen scientific publications. |
