Jeffrey M. Schwartz is a partner who concentrates his practice in bankruptcy and out-of-court restructuring. He focuses particularly on the representation of creditors in business reorganization cases under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code and purchasers of assets from financially troubled companies.
Jeffrey has a wide range of experience in the representation of unsecured creditor committees, indenture trustees, secured creditors and purchasers of distressed assets. He represents indenture trustees in numerous Chapter 11 cases throughout the country including Independence Air, Inc., Loral Space & Communications Ltd., Fleming Companies, Inc., Kitty Hawk International, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Safety-Kleen Corporation and Outboard Marine Corporation. He has represented numerous creditors committees in large, complex restructurings including the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors of World Access, Inc. and Emerald Casino, Inc. Jeffrey has also represented numerous debtors including Viskase Companies, Inc., Envirodyne Industries, Inc. and Ben Franklin Retail Stores, Inc. In addition, he has represented many buyers and sellers of distressed assets including the purchaser with respect to the assets.
Jeffrey was identified by Turnarounds & Workouts magazine as one of 2004's 12 outstanding young bankruptcy lawyers in the country. He is the immediate past president of the Chicago Bar Association Bankruptcy and Reorganization Committee. He is a co-author of "Managing Environmental Claims in Bankruptcy" for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Education (2001), a contributing editor of the 1997-2001 editions of the Wiley Bankruptcy Law Update and a co-author of "Professional Compensation: Does Bankruptcy Cost Too Much" for The American Bankruptcy Institute National Symposium Series. He has also co-authored several articles on bankruptcy law including buying and selling assets, ethics, professional fees in bankruptcy and post-confirmation issues.
In General. Jeffrey received his undergraduate degree and law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Illinois. He externed for the Honorable William V. Altenberger in the Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of Illinois. He is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Order of the Coif. |
