Mr. Jonas represents financial institutions in connection with problem business credits and debtors, trustees, distressed debt holders, committees and others in bankruptcy proceedings. He has practiced extensively in bankruptcy courts across the country in connection with a wide range of issues, including plan confirmation and related issues, stay relief, DIP arrangements, cash collateral disputes, valuation issues, and dismissal and trustee litigation. Mr. Jonas also practices frequently in various state and federal courts, in connection with loan collection matters and related issues, including the defense of lender liability claims. Mr. Jonas has worked on restructurings and/or bankruptcies in the manufacturing, retail, waste, energy, airline, automotive, paper, real estate and many other sectors.
Mr. Jonas also has extensive experience in real estate law and primarily represents buyers and sellers of commercial properties. Since 1997, he has been involved as lead attorney in acquisition and/or syndication transactions valued at approximately a billion dollars.
Mr. Jonas is a member of the Firm's Management Committee.
Recent Matters
o Lead attorney in representing a Carl Icahn affiliate in acquiring Philip Services Corp., a billion dollar revenue industrial cleaning and environmental services business, out of bankruptcy, which included cutting edge environmental, securities and cross-border insolvency issues.
o Key member of trial team representing the Equity Committee in the Mirant Corporation bankruptcy case which, after a twenty-seven day trial, successfully achieved value likely to exceed a billion dollars for alleged "out of the money" equity.
Awards & Honors
o Mr. Jonas has been selected to participate in the Federal Judicial Center's Bankruptcy Workshops, the mandated continuing legal education program for U.S. Bankruptcy Judges. More than two-hundred Bankruptcy Judges have attended Mr. Jonas' presentations.
