Jeff covers hip-hop events for Centerstage. Check out his weekly picks here. For a long time, all Jeff would ever do is play basketball. He would shoot jump shots all day every day, and he learned to love the talent that eventually became a craft. Nothing mattered except for basketball, and it consumed every moment of his free thought. In 2002, he tore his ACL and couldn't play basketball anymore, but he's still benefiting from his understanding of the learning process. Now he listens to music all day, every day. In 2005, he was driving home from a record store when he caught a radio show called "Acid Jazz by Moonlight" (on WDCB, the College of DuPage's radio station), which specializes in jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop. The playlist was unbelievable to him, so he called in to express how much he appreciated the format. In 2 months, he became a co-host, and a year after that he became the host. While ditching his media writing class at UIC one day to create a playlist for the show, he decided that it was time to expand his appreciation for his new passion. As he was contemplating this thought, a classmate came up to him, and gave him the handouts he'd missed. One read: "Writers wanted for Jazz, Soul, Funk, and Hip-Hop magazine." In a week, he was on board, writing album and concert reviews. In a month, he was spinning every Thursday with the editor of the 'zine. |
