Jay Flanz, Ph.D., received his doctorate in nuclear physics from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Flanz is the Project and Technical Director at the Harvard Massachusetts General Hospital’s (MGH) Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center. He joined MGH during the proposal stages for this facility and helped with the National Cancer Institute proposal and technical specifications required for vendor selection. Dr. Flanz was responsible for the system integration of the accelerator and building systems and ensured that the accelerator systems were appropriate for the medical requirements. He worked with IBA during the installation and commissioning of IBA’s current generation of proton machine. He worked extensively with IBA in achieving their FDA acceptance and in realizing the uptime at the MGH facility. Dr. Flanz also designed and led the installation of the MGH (non-vendor supplied) equipment, including magnet, alignment and vacuum systems. He played the leading role in the commissioning of the entire proton therapy system and was central to the successful FDA 510(k) application. Dr. Flanz formed collaborations with MIT in areas of robotics and software to benefit the MGH Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Facility. |
