James Shapiro, M.D. is the Director and Head of the Clinical Islet Transplant Program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He is a transplant surgeon who conducted extensive research in islet transplantation in the laboratory that formed the background to the current success of the Edmonton Group in 14 patients who have remained off insulin for longer than one year. He is the lead author of a recent paper in The New England Journal of Medicine showing successful transplantation of seven type 1 diabetics at the University of Alberta. He received an M.D. from the University of Newcastle and trained in Surgery in England. |
