James W. Soong is counsel in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Silicon Valley office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department where his practice focuses on intellectual property litigation in the federal courts and before the International Trade Commission, as well as strategic counseling.
Prior to joining McDermott, Jim served as the director of intellectual property for a large enterprise software company where he was in charge of patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret litigation and portfolio management worldwide. In that position, he also crafted legal strategies for each phase of the product life cycle, including design, development and marketing. Additionally, he advised a global team on intellectual property issues in licensing, standards, mergers and acquisitions, employment and other corporate matters.
Jim's prior experience in private law practice concentrated on strategic patent litigation for high-technology multinationals primarily in the electronics and software industries. He also has significant experience leading corporate patent programs, including portfolio development and licensing activities. While attending law school, he was editor of the U.C. Davis Law Review and served as an extern clerk for the Honorable Edward J. Garcia, United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. Jim received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA.
Jim is a member of the State Bars of California and Washington and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit as well as various U.S. District Courts. He is also a registered patent attorney admitted to practice before the U.S Patent and Trademark Office.
