James R. Bell III is chief risk officer and an executive vice president at National City Corporation. In his role, Mr. Bell has oversight of National City’s corporate-wide risk management system, which includes various credit, risk and compliance functions. Mr. Bell is also responsible for the principal investment activities of the corporation and serves as chairman of the Corporate Credit Policy Committee and the Enterprise Risk Committee.
Mr. Bell began his career with National City in 1982 as a corporate management trainee. He was named account officer in the national division of Corporate Banking in 1983, where he assumed increasingly responsible positions before being named division head of the multi-national east division in 1987. In 1989, Mr. Bell was promoted to senior vice president and became a member of the senior loan committee. He was appointed to division head of Corporate Banking’s metro/Ohio-East division in 1990 and head of the combined metro/Ohio group in 1991. In 1992, Mr. Bell was named group head of the multinational group of corporate banking and co-chairman of the senior loan committee. In 1994, Mr. Bell joined National City Bank of Kentucky as executive vice president of Corporate Banking and was later named president and chief executive officer of the bank and an executive vice president of the corporation in 1996. From 1998-2000, Mr. Bell served as head of the Retail Sales and Distribution functions of National City.
Prior to assuming his current role as chief risk officer, Mr. Bell served as head of the Capital Markets Group at National City until 2004. In this position, he was responsible for the operations of the group, which consists of specialized industries, large corporate loan syndications, syndicated leasing, venture capital, treasury management, commercial product development, commercial finance, structured finance and investment banking.
Mr. Bell has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and economics from Duke University and a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance from the University of Chicago. |
