Jim concentrates his practice on corporate bankruptcy and creditors’ rights, as well as commercial business and finance concerns. He handles all aspects of corporate and insurance insolvency and workout proceedings and heads the Bankruptcy Litigation practice. Jim represents secured and unsecured creditors, debtors and unsecured creditors’ committees. His experience includes bankruptcy plans, cash collateral and financing orders, asset sales, executory contracts and unexpired leases, and disclosure statements and bankruptcy appeals. He also works with international and domestic clients on commercial loans, UCC issues, distributor arrangements, as well as corporate reorganizations and refinancings. Recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America, Jim is also a frequent author and lecturer in his field. He is a contributing author to the 15th Edition Revised of Collier on Bankruptcy, the leading national treatise on bankruptcy law. Jim is also the author of the bankruptcy chapters of Lexis’s Asset Based Financing and Business Organizations (with Tax Planning) treatises and has published articles in professional and legal journals and lectures on bankruptcy and commercial finance issues at professional seminars and conferences. He is a member and trustee of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. He is also a member of its Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section and was the section’s 2003-2004 chairperson. For the past two years, Jim has served as the legal advisor to Shaw High School’s mock trial team, which advanced to the state tournament both years. He is a member and former trustee and committee chairman of the Northern Ohio chapter of the Turnaround Management Association and served as the 2004 - 2007 treasurer of the Fairmount Center for the Arts. Jim served as a law clerk for Judge Robert E. DeMascio, U.S. District Court, Detroit, Michigan, during which time Judge DeMascio was chairman of the Judicial Conference Committee on Bankruptcy. Jim was a partner with the Chicago firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt until he joined Calfee as a partner in 1988. |
