James L. Payne joined the Board of Directors of Global Industries, Ltd. in December 2000. Mr. Payne is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Shona Energy Company, LLC, a position he has held since March 2005. He served as chairman, president and chief executive officer of Nuevo Energy Company from October 2001 until its merger with Plains Exploration in May of 2004. He was vice chairman of Devon Energy Corporation from September 2000 until his retirement in January 2001.
Prior to the merger with Devon Energy in August of 2000, he served as chairman and chief executive officer of Santa Fe Snyder Corporation. Prior to the May 1999 merger of Santa Fe Energy Resources and Snyder Oil Corporation, Mr. Payne served as chairman and chief executive officer of Santa Fe Energy Resources. In 1982, he joined Santa Fe Energy Corporation, then a wholly owned subsidiary of Santa Fe Pacific Corporation as Senior Vice President - Exploration and Land and named president in 1986 and chairman and chief executive officer in 1990 when the company became publicly traded. Prior to Mr. Payne’s career with Santa Fe, he spent twenty-three years with Chevron Oil in various domestic and international exploration and management positions.
Mr. Payne graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1959 and received the Cecil H. Green Award in geophysics upon graduation. In 1993 he became a School of Mines Distinguished Achievement Medalist and currently serves on the President’s Council. In 1974, he received an MBA from Golden Gate University and in 1983 he completed the Stanford Executive Program.
Mr. Payne serves on the board of directors of Nabors Industries, Inc. and BJ Services Company. He also serves on the board of the Offshore Energy Center, Spindletop International, and Palmer Drug Abuse Program. Mr. Payne is a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. |
