Jim focuses his practice on government relations, emerging business and venture capital, and international law and is co-chair of the government relations practice group. Prior to joining Kennedy Covington and forming the firm's wholly owned subsidiary, Hodges Consulting Group, Jim served as the 114th governor of South Carolina.
He served 11 years in the South Carolina House of Representatives (1986-1997) where he chaired the House Judiciary Committee and served as House Minority Leader.
From 1990 to 1997, Jim served as general counsel and secretary of the Springs Company, one of South Carolina's largest private companies. During his tenure there, he served on the Springs Company board of directors working with a variety of affiliates including Kanawha Insurance Company, Lancaster and Chester Railroad, Charter Properties and Springland real estate development companies, and the Springs and Close Foundations.
Jim also served as Lancaster County attorney for three years (1983-1986) and was in private practice for eight years (1982-1990).
