Jim Smith is chief operating officer of The Thomson Corporation. The position was created as a part of Thomson's strategic realignment designed to focus on the electronic workflow solutions strategy and to drive operational efficiency. Mr. Smith is responsible for managing the corporation’s business segments including North American Legal, Financial, International Legal & Regulatory, Scientific, Tax & Accounting and Healthcare. He is a member of the Executive Committee.
Previously, Mr. Smith served as president and chief executive officer of Thomson Learning's Academic and Reference Group, where he led the implementation of the higher education, academic publishing, courseware and reference business.
Before that, Mr. Smith served as executive vice president, Human Resources and Administration, for The Thomson Corporation, where he was responsible for human resources, succession planning, training and development, organizational development and various administrative activities.
Mr. Smith joined the Thomson Newspaper Group in 1987. He held several staff and operating positions of increasing responsibility within the group, culminating in his role as head of operations for Thomson Newspapers-US. With the sale of the Newspaper Group in 2000, Mr. Smith joined the Thomson corporate office and was named executive vice president of The Thomson Corporation in December 2001.
Mr. Smith began his career as a journalist and held several editorial and general management positions prior to joining Thomson. He is a graduate of Marshall University. |
